Millinocket man charged in stabbing

MILLINOCKET, Maine — A Millinocket man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a Medway resident during an altercation outside a Central Street bar on Dec. 21, 2008, police said Thursday.

Corey Hannafin, 30, who is charged with elevated aggravated assault, was arrested at about midnight Wednesday at his Riverside Drive home as a result of information Sgt. Aaron Brooker, the case’s lead investigator, developed during the day, Brooker said Thursday.

“I am still investigating this,” Brooker said. “There could be additional charges. That will be determined by the District Attorney’s Office.”

Hannafin was held at Penobscot County Jail in Bangor on $2,500 bail until his arraignment in Bangor Superior Court on Thursday. He made a reduced bail after his appearance and is due back in court on March 27, police said.

Daniel Deschaine, 26, of Medway received at least two stab wounds to his left leg and buttocks when he was attacked outside the Highland Tavern, Deschaine and Brooker said.

Deschaine said last month that he was jumped at about 1:25 a.m. by two or three people after the bar closed. When the attack ended, he pounded on the tavern’s door and workers there who were cleaning up let him in, he said.

“Everybody has a little scuffle or two growing up but it was nothing I was anticipating or looking for. I am not a violent person,” Deschaine said.

A scuffle or argument of some sort between Hannafin and Deschaine, and possibly others, preceded the stabbing, Brooker said.

Deschaine was released from Millinocket Regional Hospital on Dec. 23. He spent several bedridden days at home before regaining enough strength to move around with a single crutch.

Brooker said he arrested Hannafin after witness statements identified him as the assailant. Some evidence also was sent to the state crime lab in Augusta for processing, Brooker said. Results have not been returned.

The weapon used in the stabbing has not been recovered.
