PORTLAND, Maine — Only 20 laboratory-confirmed cases of flu have been reported in Maine thus far this season, but experts caution that the numbers are likely to increase in the coming weeks.
The 20 cases were included in the latest weekly influenza surveillance report from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Hospitals, which use a faster but less sophisticated screening test, have reported 40 cases so far.
With widespread flu reported in the Midwest and the Washington, D.C., area, health care providers say it’s just a matter of time before the virus travels north and affects more people in Maine.
Doctors say it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
