CALAIS, Maine — Mother Nature hasn’t always cooperated by dumping large amounts of snow Down East, but this year is right on the mark for the Break Out of the Winter Blues two-day snowmobile event.

The Sunrise Snowmobilers invites the public to bring snowmobiles, sleds, feet, etc., to participate Feb. 6-7. Floats also are welcome.

In years past, the event has been canceled because there wasn’t enough snow. Not this year. Washington County has mounds of snow with more on the way.

The festivities kick off Friday night with a parade of snowmobiles of various makes, models and sizes.

The lineup starts near the Dear River Co., just off Main Street. The parade will travel behind the Calais Free Library and across the St. Croix River Walkway, ending behind Hardwicke’s Country Store, near the downtown international bridge.

From there, the machines will travel to the downtown Triangle Park where they will find a bonfire and hot chocolate offered by the Calais Fire Association.

“Show up and follow the leader,” club president David Daggett said during a recent interview.

The club has invited snowmobile clubs from across the state to participate.

When snowmobilers are not participating in the two days of activities, they are invited to try out some of the area trails.

Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast 8-10 a.m. at the American Legion on Calais Avenue held by the Calais Lioness group.

A poker run starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. There will be many prizes, and according to Daggett, you don’t have to own or be on a snowmobile to participate. The group is seeking donations of prizes for the event. And although there will be stops along the poker run, including Triangle Park, you don’t have to follow the map. If you can’t get to the designated spots, you can get all of the cards at the Boy Scouts’ Hall on Calais Avenue.

“All of the money goes to maintaining the snowmobile trails and our equipment,” Daggett said.

The events wrap up with Calais Lions Club’s Casino Night at the American Legion 5:30-11 p.m.
