VINALHAVEN, Maine — A local woman was jailed Monday after allegedly stabbing her 8-year-old son and ex-husband during an argument after the Super Bowl.

Maria Witham, 30, of Roberts Cemetery Road was charged with two counts of elevated aggravated assault and violation of conditions of release as a result of the Sunday night assault.

“It was definitely alcohol-related,” Knox County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ernest McIntosh said Monday of the incident.

McIntosh said the department was notified of the assault shortly after midnight. Island Deputy Larry Hesseltine went to the residence and arrested Witham.

McIntosh said Joshua Anthony, 28, Witham’s former husband, told Hesseltine that she had returned home in an intoxicated state after the Super Bowl ended and wanted to leave with her son.

When the two began arguing about her plans, Witham allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed him. When the son attempted to intervene, he was wounded as well, McIntosh said. Both Anthony and the boy were taken by ferry to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport where they were treated and later released, he said.

Witham was taken to the Knox County Jail. When she appeared in 6th District Court in Rockland on Monday morning, bail was set at $50,000 real estate surety or $5,000 cash.

Witham was released on bail Monday afternoon. Conditions of her bail require that she have no contact with her former husband, McIntosh said.
