BELFAST, Maine — A fugitive from Arizona was arrested on domestic violence charges following a knife-wielding altercation with a woman friend Sunday.

Steven Soto, 45, of Belfast was charged with domestic violence assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and obstructing the report of a crime following the 1:38 p.m. incident. He is being held at the Waldo County Jail pending extradition to Arizona.

Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton said patrolman Howard Dakin was initially dispatched to a residence on Piper Stream Road in response to a disconnected 911 call at 9:31 a.m. Sunday. When Dakin arrived, the female at the residence told him that everything was fine and that she and her male friend were getting ready for church.

A second call came in at 1:38 p.m. and when Dakin returned to the residence the woman was more forthcoming. The victim told Dakin that Soto had assaulted her and threatened her with a knife. She said she called the police because she was afraid he would return and hurt her. She also told Dakin that she believed Soto was wanted in California.

“It turned out he was wanted in Arizona,” Trafton said Monday.

Dakin located Soto and placed him under arrest. Trafton said the warrant from Arizona did not mention what Soto was wanted for, only that authorities there would extradite him if he was apprehended.
