Belfast man charged in rampage at his home

By Walter Griffin

BELFAST, Maine — A local man was arrested on domestic violence charges early Monday after he allegedly flew into a rage, assaulted a female companion and trashed their residence.

Jason Cunningham, 23, of MacLeod’s Trailer Park was charged with domestic assault and criminal mischief after the 4:42 a.m. incident. He was taken to the Waldo County Jail, where bail was set at $750.

The assault remains under investigation and additional charges will be filed, according to arresting Officer Rick Smith.

Smith said he responded to a report of a disturbance at Cunningham’s residence and could hear shouting from inside the trailer when he approached the door. Smith said that when he knocked on the door Cunningham answered and told him, “Arrest me, or I’m going to kill someone.”

Smith said Cunningham had been drinking that morning and got into a shouting match with the victim and her mother. At some point he grabbed the victim and began striking her and kicking her with his steel-toed boots. The woman suffered multiple bruises and complained of soreness, Smith said.

He said the altercation was overheard by Cunningham’s brother, who lived nearby, and the two began fighting when the brother attempted to intervene. Cunningham allegedly threatened his brother with a knife. During the fight, Cunningham stabbed a knife into an interior door, smashed the toilet, kicked over furniture and threw articles around the residence, according to Smith.

Cunningham was arrested without incident, Smith said.
