Cony takes crown; Skowhegan is 3rd

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Cony High School of Augusta went 5-for-5 in the championship finals of Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class A Regional Wrestling Championships at Skowhegan High School to win the team title by 12.5 points over runner-up Mount Ararat of Topsham.

Andy Ancira started things off by winning the 103-pound weight class title with a pin of Kelly Golek of Mount Ararat.

Will Lundquist was the next Ram to mine gold as he pinned Brewer’s Stephen Desjardins in the 125-pound final.

Cony’s other individual champions were Chris Robinson in 152, T.J. Vallee in 189, and Shawn White in 285.

Cony finished with 179 points to Mount Ararat’s 166.5. Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference champion Skowhegan was third with 121, Morse of Bath fourth at 120.5, and Nokomis of Newport fifth with 104.

The other individual champions were D.J. Brackett of Morse in 112, Matt DelGallo of Gardiner in 119, Gary Theriault from Mt. Blue of Farmington in 130, Skowhegan’s Caleb Austin in 135, Mount Ararat’s Jake Oh in 140, Drew Leeman from Erskine Academy of South China in 145, Morse’s Spencer Chipman in 160 and Ty-ler Russell in 171, and Justin Gould from Nokomis of Newport in 215.

Brewer High School placed one wrestler in the championship finals and three more in the consolation finals. Nick Averill of Bangor won the consolation final in 103 as an independent wrestler. Steven Hutchins and Jackson Hutchins of Nokomis finished second in 135 and 140, respectively. Gerald Gould and Heiko Nichols each finished third in 215 and 285, respectively.

Brewer tied for seventh with Gardiner at 51 points apiece, Bangor was 11th with 10 points and Lawrence was 13th with two.

For Nokomis, Steven Hutchins and Jackson Hutchins both turned in strong efforts with second-place finishes with Steven in 135 and Jackson in 140.

Gerald Gould and Heiko Nichols also earned some points for the Warriors with third-place efforts with Gould in 189 and Nichols in 285.

For Brewer, along with Desjardins’ strong runner-up finish in 125, Qasey Perry, Nate Davies and Joaquin Padilla all recorded fourth-place finishes with Perry in 119, Davies in 130 and Padilla in 140.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to this Saturday’s state championship meets at the Augusta Civic Center.
