Rumford snowmobiler rescued from river

The Associated Press

RUMFORD, Maine — A 21-year-old Rumford man was treated for hypothermia after riding his snowmobile into open water on the Androscoggin River in western Maine.

The Maine Warden Service said Michael Thurston was snowmobiling with Benjamin Hodgkins of Roxbury at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday when he drove into open water downstream from the Rumford Point Bridge.

Warden Josh Smith said Hodgkins rode home and called 911. Thurston was able to prop himself up on the ice with his arms for about an hour before a local man and Rumford firefighters were able to throw him a rope and pull him to safety.

Thurston was transported by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was treated for hypothermia.
