Baldacci says ’09 budget a warmup

AUGUSTA, Maine — The budget revision just signed into law is just a warm-up for the larger biennial budget Maine lawmakers must take up.

That’s what Gov. John Baldacci said in his weekly radio address Saturday. The Democratic governor credits lawmakers for putting partisanship aside in passing the budget to make up for a $166 million gap between projected revenue and spending through June 30. Baldacci signed that budget into law Thursday.

Now, Baldacci says lawmakers must turn their attention to the next two-year budget, which addresses a shortfall of more than $800 million, changes the way government provides services and reduces administration. Baldacci says there’s much more work to do, and it will require state officials to work together to get it done.
