FRANKFORT, Maine — A Frankfort man was injured Thursday after the pickup he was driving struck an oil tanker truck on U.S. Route 1A.

After the crash, Joseph Wellman, 52, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was treated for undisclosed injuries and released.

According to Chief Deputy Bob Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred about 11:50 a.m. on Route 1A when Wellman lost control of his 2002 Jeep SUV and crossed into the path of an Irving Oil tank truck driven by Wayne R. Brown, 63, of Houlton. Brown, who attempted to avoid the Jeep, was not injured.

Though the impact caused the tank truck to jackknife, the truck did not tip over and no fuel spilled, Keating said.

Keating said both drivers were wearing seat belts when the accident occurred.

He said Wellman’s Jeep had about $5,000 in damage and the oil company’s 2005 Freightliner truck had about $3,000 in damage.
