A Brewer man was arrested Thursday on an arson charge in connection with a Nov. 2 fire at a rooming house located at 8 Webster Ave. in Bangor.

After his arrest, Kyle Cunningham, 19, of Brewer was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he was expected to remain until today, when he is scheduled to make an initial appearance at 3rd District Court in Bangor, jail officials confirmed Thursday night.

According to police reports, the fire was started in a tenant’s room around 1 a.m. while other renters were asleep in their rooms.

The initial investigation of the fire scene indicated that the fire started on a bed and that it was the result of a “human element,” Sgt. Paul Edwards noted Thursday in a news release.

The investigation had been ongoing since that time and the Bangor Police Department was assisted by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s office. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

Staff and students at James F. Doughty Middle School in Bangor were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a bomb threat was discovered in a restroom.

Though no bomb was found, the incident remains under investigation by the Bangor Police Department and by school officials.

“There is an ongoing investigation and we will find out who is behind this and hold them accountable,” Superintendent Betsy Webb said.

“It’s just disappointing,” she said. “It’s a disruption to our academic day and we just don’t have enough time as it is.”

According to police reports, the bomb threat was reported at 12:56 p.m. Staff and students were evacuated immediately and taken to a safe location before being released for the day, Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber said. Four city police officials, along with school custodians, conducted a room-by-room search of the school but found nothing suspicious, he said. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
