BELFAST, Maine — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department has recovered a cargo trailer stolen from Liberty earlier this month, and has arrested four men in connection with the theft.
David Linscott Jr., 27, of Searsmont was charged with theft by unauthorized taking and violation of conditions of release, and is being held without bail at Waldo County Jail.
Jason Kenney, 35, of Searsport was charged with theft by unauthorized taking, cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine, and later was released on $1,000 bail.
Dennis W. Tripp Jr., 35, of Stockton Springs was charged with theft by unauthorized taking and violation of conditions of release, and is being held without bail.
Edward A. Peaslee, 30, of Searsport was charged with theft by unauthorized taking, criminal simulation and possession of drug paraphernalia, and is being held on $500 bail.
Chief Deputy Robert Keating said the 10-foot-by-6-foot cargo trailer was taken from a home on Knowlton Shores Road in Liberty on Jan 5. The theft was reported by the press, and an alert newspaper reader saw a trailer fitting its description beside a residence on Deer Run Lane in Searsport.
Through a series of interviews, Detective Merl Reed and Deputy James Greeley learned that Linscott allegedly was involved in the theft and placed him under arrest. Linscott admitted the theft during a subsequent interview at the county jail, Keating said Tuesday.
According to Reed’s report, Linscott said he and the other three men were riding around in his truck when they saw the trailer and decided to steal it. Linscott told Reed that Kenney was driving at the time and that Tripp hooked the trailer to the truck.
Armed with that information, Reed obtained a search warrant Friday for the Deer Run Lane residence. Reed, Deputies Greeley and Dan Thompson, and Searsport Officers Steve Saucier and Eric Bonney went to the home and confronted the occupants.
Along with the trailer, the search yielded seven marijuana plants, cocaine and several power tools inscribed with initials that did not match those of Linscott, Kenney, Tripp or Peaslee.
