St. Joseph’s College to cut budget by 3 percent

STANDISH, Maine — St. Joseph’s College says it’s cutting its current operating budget by $1 million, or 3 percent, a move that includes the elimination of 14 jobs.

In his announcement Tuesday, President E. Joseph Lee said the Roman Catholic college in Standish joins a long list of businesses, governments and colleges that have curtailed spending in the face of severe declines in the financial markets.

St. Joseph’s said it sought to avoid cuts that involved reductions in personnel, but had to lay off 13 employees and leave one position unfilled.

Lee says that with economic forecasts grim, the school must prepare for an extended period of financial stress in which student enrollment and gift receipts may not reach levels seen in recent years.
