8-year-old Fort Kent boy dies after sledding into road

FORT KENT, Maine — An 8-year-old boy died early Monday evening after he was struck by a car while sliding at his home.

Police Chief Kenneth Michaud said Tuesday that the accident happened just before 3:30 p.m. on Aroostook Road-Route 11.

According to Michaud, Anthony Hodgkin, 8, was sliding in his driveway with his siblings. The boy slid to the end of his driveway but could not stop his sled.

“He slid right out into the road and under the tires of a truck that was southbound on the roadway,” the chief said. “The driver did not see the boy until he slid into the road.”

The driver of the vehicle, Reno Cyr, 43, called emergency services. So did the boy’s mother, according to Michaud.

The boy was taken by the Fort Kent Ambulance Department to Northern Maine Medical Center, but died of a cervical spine fracture a few hours later.

No charges will be filed, according to the chief.

“This was a plain accident,” Michaud said Tuesday.
