Recall alerts

A few food safety issues to report. Stonewall Kitchens, the York-based specialty foods company, is voluntarily recalling several of its dessert sauces because of the potential threat of botulism, though no one has been sickened as yet. Stonewall’s Chocolate Hazelnut Sauce, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coffee Caramel Sauce and Dulce de Leche Sauce, as well as the Stonewall-produced Barefoot Contessa Espresso Dulce de Leche and the Simply Enjoy Coffee Caramel Sauce and Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce have all been recalled for a full refund. Call 1-800-826-1735 for more information. Also in the news, Portland-based Barber Foods Co. is recalling its Market Day Stuffed Chicken Breast Roast with Rib Meat, with Cranberry and Sage Stuffing, as well as its Barber Carver with Cranberry and Sage Stuffing. The move is driven after the company received consumer complaints about finding bits of plastic inside the product. For more information, call 1-800-577-2595.

Thai score

Natalie’s in Camden will host a special 10-day celebration of the cuisine of Thailand, thanks to special guest chef Michael MacDonnell, who will work alongside executive chef Lawrence Klang to create a Thai fusion menu. A five-course Thai tasting menu is set for $65, along with a five-course lobster menu, set at market price. Thai music and dance will be performed nightly in the restaurant, and special two-night overnight deals at the Camden Harbor Inn — including Thai massage, a cooking class and welcome cocktail — are listed on the Web site, www.camdenharborinn.com. The menu will be served through Feb. 6.

First family recipe

What with all the excitement and good will in the air from last week’s presidential inauguration, all things Obama are hot right now. And, naturally, one of the hottest things about the First Family is the recently circulated recipe for the Obama family chili. It’s not quite as tomato-y as most chilis, and, well … red wine vinegar? Whatever. Change is good, isn’t it?

Obama Family Chili Recipe

1 large onion, chopped

1 green pepper, chopped

Several cloves of garlic, chopped

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 pound ground turkey or beef

¼ teaspoon ground cumin

¼ teaspoon ground oregano

¼ teaspoon ground turmeric

¼ teaspoon ground basil

1 tablespoon chili powder

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Several tomatoes, depending on size, chopped

1 can red kidney beans

Saute onion, green pepper and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add ground meat and brown. Combine spices together into a mixture, then add to ground meat. Add red wine vinegar and tomatoes and let simmer, until tomatoes cook down. Add kidney beans and cook for a few more minutes. Serve over white or brown rice. Garnish with grated cheddar cheese, onions, and sour cream.
