AUGUSTA, Maine — The Belfast Lions crowned three individual champions and earned seven top-four finishes overall Saturday to win their second straight Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference wrestling championship at Cony High School.
Belfast, the defending Class B state champion, scored 165.5 points to secure both the overall team title and the Class B divisional championship.
Skowhegan emerged from a tight battle for second place with 142 points, good to earn the Indians the KVAC Class A crown. Camden Hills of Rockport (141.5) edged Cony (140) for third place, while Morse of Bath finished with 128.5 points to complete the top five finishers in the 22-school field.
Belfast was led by senior Travis Spencer and junior Kote Aldus, each of whom won his third consecutive KVAC individual title, and Zach Shellabarger, who earned his second conference title.
Spencer, a three-time state champion who recently became Belfast’s career leader in victories, defeated T.J. Vallee of Cony, the 2007 KVAC champion at 171 pounds, by a score of 7-2 in the 189-pound championship match.
Aldus, the reigning New England champion at 160 pounds, defeated Dillon White of Skowhegan via technical fall by a score of 21-4 in the 160-pound final.
Shellabarger, the KVAC champion at 145 pounds last winter, won this year’s 152-pound title by pinning Jake Sylvain of Skowhegan in 4:54.
Coach Ted Heroux’s Belfast club also got second-place finishes from Jordan Young at 112 pounds and Josh Robbins at 130, a third from Mark Smith at 215 and a fourth from Winston Poole at 103.
Skowhegan did not crown any individual champions, but four Indians earned second-place finishes: Sylvain, White, Joey Buzzell (145 pounds) and Todd Steward (285). Kaleb Austin (135) and James Grant (171) each finished third for Skowhegan.
Individual victories by Zac Fields (130) and Jack Simpkins (145) lifted Camden Hills to its third-place finish overall, second among Class B schools. Brandon Rich placed second at 135 for the Windjammers, while Logan Rich (103) and Jacob Powers (145) and finished third.
Other individual champions included senior Brandon Wright of Pittsfield’s Maine Central Institute, who claimed his first conference title since his freshman year by pinning Keith Madore of Oak Hill of Sabattus in 1:25 of the 119-pound final. Wright, who won the 103-pound title in 2006, had finished second in his weight class each of the last two years.
Justin Gould of Nokomis of Newport won the 215-pound championship. He pinned Adam Hathorne of Oak Hill in 5:11 of that championship match.
Also winning individual titles were Andy Ancira (103) and Shawn White (285), both of Cony; D.J. Brackett (112), Spencer Chipman (145) and Tyler Russell (171), all of Morse of Bath; Matt DelGallo (125) of Gardiner; and Andrew Currier (135) of Mt. Blue of Farmington, also named the meet’s outstanding wrestler.
Shawn Totman of Cony was named the KVAC coach of the year.
