BELFAST, Maine — A Thorndike man was arrested on a theft charge after money was taken from a wallet in a Waldo County YMCA locker room Sunday afternoon.

Daryl A. Emery, 20, was caught in a sting operation at approximately 2:45 p.m. Emery is a member and frequent user of the YMCA facilities.

Patrolman Howard Dakin said several hundred dollars had been reported stolen at the YMCA over the past few months and officials there, through a process of elimination, focused on Emery as a possible suspect.

On Sunday, YMCA director Dale Cross left a pair of pants with a wallet containing two $20 bills in the locker room. After watching Emery enter the area, Cross returned and checked the wallet and found the $40 was missing. He confronted Emery and called the police. The money was recovered from Emery.

“They conducted their own internal investigation and it apparently worked,” Dakin said. “They baited him, and he took the bait.”’

Emery was booked at the Waldo County Jail, where bail was set at $100 cash.
