Connecticut man hospitalized after snowmobile crash

By Julia Bayly, BDN Staff

LINNEUS, Maine — Excessive speed is being blamed for a snowmobile accident that sent a Connecticut man to Eastern Maine Medical Center on Sunday morning.

According to Ben Drew of the Maine Warden Service, Chris Hersom, 39, of Waterford, Conn., was traveling south at 9 a.m. on ITS 883 near the Hodgton-Linneus town line when he failed to negotiate a curve and his sled left the trail, striking a tree.

Hersom was in a group of four other snowmobilers and was in the lead at the time of the accident.

He was transported by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center with a bruised lung and fractured collarbone, Drew said.

Hersom’s 2009 MXZ-800 sustained minor damage.

“Speed was a factor,” Drew said.

No charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation. Members of the Houlton Police Department and the Houlton Fire Department Search and Rescue unit assisted at the scene.
