Orono police investigating Friday break-in at Bell’s IGA

ORONO, Maine — Police are investigating an early Friday break-in at Bell’s Orono IGA in which an undetermined amount of cash was taken from an ATM.

The break-in, which police believe occurred sometime after midnight, was discovered about 4 a.m. by a cleaning crew, Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing said Friday.

The cleaners noticed that an ATM machine at the front of the store had been broken into and they called the police, who spent the morning gathering evidence.

According to Ewing, the burglar or burglars forced their way into the store through a back door. Whoever broke in also tried to break into a safe in the store office but were not successful. They also threw cans and spilled soda around the store, he said.

Ewing said police did not have a suspect and asked that anyone who may have seen unusual activity in the area between midnight and 4 a.m. Friday, or who has any other information about the case, to call Orono police Detective Andrew Whitehouse at 866-4000.
