As expected, voters in the towns of Hermon, Levant and Carmel on Saturday rejected a proposal to consolidate their schools into a state-mandated regional school unit.

In Hermon, 335 residents voted against the proposal, while only 22 supported it, according to Town Clerk Carol Davis. Similar lop-sided results were reported in Carmel (167 against, 10 in favor) and Levant

(174-16), the two communities that make up SAD 23.

By voting not to consolidate, all three towns could be subjected to a penalty assessed by the state.

Several other cities and towns across the state have either voted on consolidation proposals or are planning to in the coming weeks.

According to information released by the state Department of Education last week, 17 reorganization plans were approved by voters while nine

were rejected. Another 30 were pending.
