BAR HARBOR, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets announced Friday that is has met with local officials in Bar Harbor to present plans for a new 35,000-square-foot store.

The new store, which would be the company’s second on Mount Desert Island, is proposed for a site on the northwest part of the island, at the intersection of Knox and Crooked roads, near Town Hill. Hannaford hopes to obtain all needed approvals and break ground on the project this year.

“The new store will provide even more convenience for people in the region to shop for a wide variety of fresh, high-quality foods at great value, as well as a full-service pharmacy to fill their prescriptions,” Hannaford spokesman Michael Norton said.

A butcher shop, produce and seafood departments, bakery, deli and a large selection of natural and organic foods also will be available at the new store, which will employ about 100 full-time and part-time workers.

Norton said the new store will be constructed from environmentally friendly building materials and will have energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration systems,

The company’s existing 24,000-square-foot store, located at 85 Cottage St. in downtown Bar Harbor, will remain open.

“As we’ve demonstrated with our in-town location, we believe in volunteering, supporting local projects and contributing to the health and vitality of the community we serve,” Norton said. “We’ll continue that commitment with our second store.”
