Bangor Y benefits from gift by firms

BANGOR – After completing Merrill Bank’s newest branch at 727 Broadway in Bangor in August, and closing their books at year’s end, officials at Nickerson & O’Day Inc. found they had come in under budget for the building project and had $4,000 left over.

Karl Ward, president and CEO for Nickerson & O’Day said, “I called Bill [Lucy] and told him we had an excess of $4,000 left from the project. I knew Merrill Bank shared the same philosophy as Nickerson O’Day in supporting youth programs, and Bill agreed that together, we would present the proceeds to the Bangor Y to benefit their Leaders School at Camp Jordan.”

Bill Lucy, president and CEO for Merrill Bank, an avid Bangor Y health and fitness patron and supporter of the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign, agreed with Ward.

“The Bangor Y Leaders School has a proven track record of success in developing leadership skills in our youth,” Lucy said. By making a monetary investment in this program, we are also making a long-term investment in the youth of the Eastern Maine region that the Bangor Y serves.”

Accepting the check on behalf of the Bangor Y, Pat Gaetani, president of the Y board of directors, said, “We couldn’t be more pleased to receive this gift from Nickerson O’Day and Merrill Bank. Both of these businesses have a long history of supporting programs at the Y, as well as giving back to the communities they serve. In these financially challenging times, the Bangor Y is thankful to have been chosen the recipient of these ‘left over’ funds. We will put the money to good use in supporting our youth.”
