BREWER, Maine — The Penobscot Bridge was reopened at about 1:45 p.m., after being closed for more than an hour Thursday because of traffic problems caused when nearby railroad crossing lights malfunctioned, a dispatcher said.

A representative from Pan Am Railways, formerly Guilford Rail, arrived at the scene just after 1 p.m. and worked with Brewer police officers to correct the problem. The bridge was reopened shortly afterward.

During the closure, Brewer police diverted traffic to the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge or the Veterans Memorial Bridge and officers could be seen directing traffic on the bridge and on South Main Street. printed on July 23, 2017
