BANGOR, Maine — Two Houlton residents came to town and went on a stealing spree, first breaking into an office at an apartment complex on Wednesday, then taking items from an apartment in the complex, police said.

Both remained in Penobscot County Jail on Thursday night facing several charges, including two counts each of felony burglary for the separate thefts, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Jessi Polchies, 24, and Ryan Varnie, 26, first were charged with Class C burglary at around 5:30 p.m. after they were caught stealing cash from an office of Maliseet Gardens on Oak Street. After being charged the pair was asked to leave the property.

It later was learned, however, that the two also may have taken apartment keys, Edwards said.

At 10:15 p.m. police returned to the apartment complex to talk with a resident who reported that her apartment was burglarized and that items from her purse, including credit cards, were missing, Edwards said.

While talking to her bank to put a hold on the credit cards, a victim was informed that someone had attempted to use the card at the Ramada Inn on Odlin Road.

Police went to the Ramada and found Polchies and Varnie in a room rented with the stolen card and arrested them on charges of Class B burglary of a residence.

Both also are charged with misuse of identification, theft of services and theft by unauthorized taking.

If convicted of the Class B burglary charges, Polchies and Varnie would face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

Both had their first appearance in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Thursday, where bail for Varnie, who is from Houlton but who is listed as a Bangor transient, was set at $4,000 cash or $40,000 surety.

Polchies was already on parole for undisclosed charges when she was arrested. Her parole officer requested she be held on her parole violation, but her bail was set at $400 or $4,000 surety during court.
