Across Maine, thousands of workers, schoolchildren and others paused to watch the inauguration of the nation’s first black president.

Schools including the Isle au Haut School with eight pupils let students watch Barack Obama take the oath of office live on TV. Many businesses also let workers watch the historic inauguration, as well. At Mercy Hospital in Portland, employees watched in the auditorium.

In downtown Portland, dozens gathered to watch on a series of television screens at the Maine Democratic Party’s official event at a sports bar.

There were no truly large events in Maine. Instead, there were a series of smaller events across the state to mark Obama’s inauguration.
