Maine man dies from burns in arson fire

The Associated Press

WELLS, Maine — Police say a Wells man has died from injuries he suffered when his wife allegedly set fire to the apartment while he slept.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Tuesday that 39-year-old Christopher Spampinato died over the weekend at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

McCausland said Spampinato’s wife, Kimberly, doused him with flammable liquid and set him on fire at their apartment in Wells. She was charged with attempted murder and arson following the Jan. 8 fire.

Spampinato’s death is classified as a homicide, the first of the year in Maine. The attorney general’s office will make a decision on whether to upgrade charges against Kimberly Spampinato.
