NEWPORT, Maine — A Vassalboro teenager lost control of her car on Interstate 95 on Monday morning, and rolled it over in the median.

Meghan Kothman, 17, was driving south at mile marker 158, just north of the Newport business district exit, when she lost control while passing several vehicles, Maine state Trooper Douglas Franklin said.

The accident happened just before 11 a.m., and Franklin said Kothman was driving too fast for road conditions.

Franklin said Kothman was trapped in her demolished car for several minutes. A wrecker operator from K&K Towing in Palmyra was able to extricate her. A nurse was in one of the cars that Kothman had passed and was able to render first aid until rescue workers arrived.

Kothman, who suffered head injuries, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by Sebasticook Valley Ambulance, according to the trooper.

Franklin said he was assisted at the scene by Newport Rescue and Fire, and Trooper Jon Brown.
