HOULTON, Maine — An Arizona woman reportedly committed suicide near the Houlton port of entry last week.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the woman, whose age and hometown were not available, reportedly had threatened to kill herself when she tried to cross the border just before Christmas.

McCausland said a suicide note was found in her belongings along with $43,000, when she tried to cross into Canada from the United States in December. The note and cash were uncovered in a search of her purse.

She was taken to a hospital and received treatment, McCausland said, but last week her body was found in the woods near the Houlton port with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police did not find the money and believe it may have been mailed to friends in Canada before her death.
