Up with People is known for its engaging and inspiring musical performances. Its global education program offers participants first-hand exposure to social issues and provides the opportunity to address local community needs and make an impact all over the world.
Pfleiderer will travel and participate in community service projects in 25 cities in the United States, Mexico and Taiwan. This month, she will be in Denver to participate in two community service projects while learning the performance routines and getting to know the other cast members. She will room with a singer from Denmark.
From Denver the troupe will tour through the southeastern United States, Florida, Alabama, Texas and Louisiana. Then it’s off to Taiwan, the first time Up With People has done a tour in that country. From Taiwan Pfleiderer and the Up With People cast will fly to Mexico.
Pfleiderer said this is an opportunity of a lifetime, that “being able to participate in Up With People will teach me so much about the world. Not only will I be able to travel the world, but I will be immersed in many different cultures. I will be staying with host families around the world.
“Here I will learn some of their language and about their beliefs and native foods,” she said. “These are all aspects that will strengthen my teaching in the future, which I plan to continue when I return to Maine. I will return to the teaching profession with a greater knowledge of the world and different people.”
“I will be able to teach my students acceptance by using the information I gain,” Pfleiderer said. “I will be able to collect some native artifacts from many places around the world that will be passed around to the students. I will be able to cook foods from cultures that my students may never be able to visit. My future students also will be introduced to some of the different languages I pick up through my travels.”
In order to participate in the program, Pfleiderer needs to raise a total of $14,000, and she is accepting donations.
