Sheriff: Jail inmate death appears to be a suicide

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine man who participated in a program that helps inmates facing prison time and battling mental illness turn their lives around has died in jail.

Sheriff Randall Liberty says the body of 32-year-old Arthur Traweek was found in the Kennebec County Jail and the death appears to be a suicide. Liberty says Traweek’s body was found hanging by a sheet at 3:20 p.m. Monday by another inmate.

Last May, Traweek was the focus of a Kennebec Journal article regarding the Co-Occurring Disorders Court program. Liberty says Traweek was in jail for allegedly violating his probation and unauthorized use of property.
