CAMDEN, Maine — A Hope man was hospitalized after running a stop sign and crashing his car into the side of an SAD 28 school bus Tuesday morning. There were no school children on the bus.

Joseph Martirano, 49, of Hope was transported by Camden First Aid to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment of leg injuries. The bus driver, Edith Bryant, 40, of Rockport was not injured in the 8:25 a.m. accident. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Patrolman Kurt Andrick said the empty bus was traveling north on Simonton toward Camden when Martirano, heading east in a 2002 Saturn, drove through a stop sign at John Street and collided with the bus. The Saturn struck the bus broadside near the left rear tire. The impact crumpled the front end of the Saturn. The car was declared a total wreck and had to be towed from the scene. The bus received an estimated $2,000 in damage.

Charges are pending, Andrick said.
