ELLSWORTH and BIRCH HARBOR – Avis R. Cowperthwaite, 84, of Ellsworth and formerly of Birch Harbor, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born March 14, 1924, in Steuben, daughter of the late Hollis and Frances (Smith) Rolfe. Avis was a graduate of Winter Harbor High School. She was employed at Stinson Canning for a number of years, while raising her family. Mrs. Cowperthwaite enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. She shared nearly half a century of marriage with the late Benjamin Cowperthwaite, who died in 1988. Family members include her children, Phyllis Bradstreet and husband, Arvide, and Lawrence Cowperthwaite, all of Birch Harbor; grandchildren, Gail, Malcolm, Christine, Benny “BJ,” James “JJ” and Lacey; great-grandchildren, Chad, Arvide “AJ,” Ashley, Brett and Wyatt; a sister, Elsie Davis; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Phinney; and a sister, Betty Clark. Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Birch Harbor Baptist Church, Birch Harbor. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Burial will be afterward at Birch Harbor Cemetery, Birch Harbor.
