HOULTON, Maine — A 53-year-old Island Falls man became the third snowmobile-related fatality this season after an accident Sunday night.
Raymond Webb died just before 3 a.m. Monday at Houlton Regional Hospital from injuries he suffered when he apparently struck an overhanging tree while riding his Ski-Doo MXZ 500SS south on an access trail on the west branch of the Mattawamkeag River near Houlton.
While the accident remains under investigation, Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said Monday afternoon that alcohol may have been a factor.
Turcotte said Webb had been riding with a group of friends Sunday night but was alone at the time of the accident.
One of the members of the group apparently was looking for Webb and came across the accident scene and reported it at 11:44 p.m. Sunday.
Webb was taken by ambulance to the Houlton hospital.
Maine Warden Sgt. Brian Gray responded to the report of the accident.
