Hartford women soar over Bears 77-46

ORONO, Maine — The University of Hartford women’s basketball program is the model for excellence in the America East conference.

Saturday afternoon, the defending league champion Hawks showed off their trademark defensive intensity while breezing to a 77-46 victory over the University of Maine at Alfond Arena.

Hartford limited UMaine to 33 percent shooting and forced many of the Black Bears’ 25 turnovers while improving to 7-7 overall, 2-0 in league play. It was the Hawks’ eighth consecutive win over UMaine.

Coach Cindy Blodgett’s Bears dropped to 2-13, 0-2 in America East while losing their ninth straight contest.

Lisa Etienne connected for 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Hartford, which came up with 18 steals. Eric Beverly scored 15 points to go with five rebounds, six assists, four steals and a blocked shot, while Diana Delva posted 14 points.

The Hawks shot 48 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Bears 41-28.

Junior point guard Kristen Baker of Bingham paced UMaine with 12 points, five assists and two steals. She committed nine turnovers.

Brittany Boser added nine points and seven rebounds.
