The Full Wolf Moon in January was given its name by Native Americans because wolf packs howled hungrily out-side their villages during this time of year. It is also called the Old Moon or the Moon After Yule. According to NASA, Saturday night’s moon appeared about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than some other full moons this year. This full moon was the brightest one you’ll see in a long time, according to the Web site Suite101.com that says earth’s neighbor was at perigee (the closest in its orbit) at 222,138 miles at 6 p.m. It was also the “third brightest of the 25 year period from 1993 to 2017, the site said. Suite101.com Media Inc. is a private Canadian company based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
