G & M Variety in Holden has announced that it will sponsor its second annual ice-fishing derby on four popular Hancock County waters.

The derby will be held on Feb. 7-8 on Phillips, Branch and Green lakes and Beech Hill Pond.

Greg Hawes, the owner of G & M Variety, said Friend & Friend of Ellsworth will be on hand at the store with snowmobiles, and free hot dogs and drinks will be provided for participants.

Top prizes in the salmon and togue divisions will each win a Jiffy ice auger, Heritage ice-fishing traps and other gear. Second-prize winners will receive a medium Jet sled and five Heritage traps.

Pleasant Lake derby on tap

Ice anglers looking for another derby to try may want to investigate the 11th annual Pleasant Lake Ice Fishing Derby, which will be held in Stetson on Feb. 14 — one of the state’s free ice-fishing days.

The grand prize drawing will award $500 of home heating oil to a ticket-holder who needn’t be present to win. Cash prizes will be handed out to anglers who catch the three largest bass and three largest pickerel.

The entry fee is just $5, with proceeds to benefit Howard Lodge Square & Compass Club.
