A young man from Bangor was arrested on charges of drunken driving and operating after suspension of his driver’s license Friday morning — just minutes after he turned 18.

Police were tipped off that Zachary Ladd might be driving impaired, according to Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt. Not long after that, officers caught up with Ladd on Hudson Street.

A check of computer records also showed that Ladd was wanted on a warrant for an unrelated juvenile offense, Hunt said.

After his arrest, Ladd was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he was released on unspecified bail later in the day.

Hunt said that when tested, Ladd’s blood alcohol level registered at 0.10, which is over the legal limit of 0.08 for adults. Because Ladd is not 21, however, he was not supposed to have any alcohol in his system. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

Hampden police are investigating a burglary Thursday afternoon in which two recently refilled bottles of prescription medications were taken.

The missing drugs were identified as Xanax, which is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, and the painkiller Percocet, according to Hampden police Sgt. Scott Webber, who is leading the investigation.

According to Webber, the drugs were taken in a “smash and grab” incident at a home on Western Avenue that occurred while the owner was away for about an hour.

“It was not your typical break-in,” Webber said.

Webber said it appeared that whoever broke into the home was interested only in the pills and might have had some information about the medications being there or about the homeowner’s schedule or both.

After kicking in the door, the thief or thieves grabbed the bottles from a table that was not visible from the door or nearby windows and fled the home.

Nothing else in the house appeared to have been taken or disturbed, which Webber noted was “very unusual” in a burglary. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

Bangor police, who have been dealing with a spike in stolen vehicles, are looking into another case, this one involving a missing 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage.

According to a police report filed Thursday by its owner, the silver two-door sedan was last seen Dec. 22 on Bolling Drive, where it was left after it broke down, Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt said Friday.

Thinking that it might have been towed or picked up by a family member or friend, the owner did not immediately file a police report, Hunt said.
