A Wells man was critically burned in a fire early this morning and his wife is under arrest charged with arson, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire took place at the couple’s apartment located on Harbor Road, investigators said.

Christopher Spampinato, 39, is being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for burns to over 85 percent of his body, investigators said. His wife, Kimberly Spampinato, 42, is in the York County Jail charged with arson and violating bail conditions. She turned herself in at the Wells Police Department after the fire was reported shortly after midnight.

Fire Marshals said Spampinato was asleep when the fire broke out. He was found badly burned, sitting on the front steps to the house, when Wells Police officers arrived at the fire scene. The fire was contained to the first floor apartment and minor smoke and water damage was reported to the other six apartments in the building. Nine residents of the other apartments escaped without injury.

Kimberly Spampinato was charged by Fire Marshals with arson and Wells Police lodged the violation of bail conditions charge against her. She had been arrested late last year on a domestic abuse charge involving her husband and was currently out on bail.

Because of the seriousness of Spampinato’s injuries, State Police detectives joined Wells Police and the Fire Marshal’s Office in the investigation.
