BATH, Maine — Bath Iron Works has announced the layoffs of 179 workers, the largest single job cut in at least three years.

The cuts, announced Thursday, cover 11 trades including shipfitters, machinists, pipefitters and welders. The effective date of the layoffs is Jan. 23.

Shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini says the Navy shipbuilder will work to place some of the laid off workers in other jobs. That number remains to be seen.

The shipyard, which has 5,700 workers, has been reducing its work force because of a gap in shipbuilding as the DDG-51 destroyer program winds down and production of the next-generation DDG-1000 destroyer ramps up. Some of the workers could be recalled as the DDG-1000 ramps up.
