ORONO, Maine — University of Maine defensive end Jovan Belcher is collecting as many honors in the offseason as he did sacks and tackles for a loss during the season.

The Black Bears’ senior co-captain has been named a member of The Sports Network All-American first team, making him the second UMaine player in three years to be a consensus first team All-American.

Matt King also was a first-team pick by The Sports Network, the Walter Camp Foundation, the American Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press in 2006.

An AP second team pick and Sports Network third team selection last year, Belcher is just the fourth Black Bear to earn All-America honors in multiple seasons. The others are John Huard (165-66), Aaron Dashiell (1998-99) and Stephen Cooper (2001-02).

Belcher was runner-up for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) level. He was also named the Colonial Athletic Association defensive player of the year.

The native of West Babylon, N.Y., was first in the league in tackles with 98, second in tackles for a loss with 17½ and fourth in sacks with 7½ as he helped lead Maine to a playoff berth, an 8-5 record and a No. 18 ranking in the final Sports Network Top 25 poll. He was also named to the CAA all-conference first team and a New England Football Writers All-Star.
