A sad note about the Bangor dining scene: The Barking Cat Café, the Hammond Street eatery that specialized in vegetarian and vegan menu items, closed its doors on Jan. 4. My heart weeps for the loss of the Nutella banana panini, the dishes featuring that most underused of grains — quinoa — and the vegan pancakes. What’s better on a cold winter afternoon than snuggling up with a big bowl of soup and a movie? Snuggling up with a big bowl of soup, a movie and a bunch of your friends, that’s what. Especially if you don’t have to cook the soup. The Stonington Opera House knows that, and last Sunday launched the first of its winterlong “Souper Sundays,” which features first-run movies at 4 p.m., accompanied by Hungarian Mushroom Soup or Smoked Turkey with Wild Rice Soup from Lily’s Café. Some Sundays also feature burritos from El El Frijoles in Brooklin and lasagna from the Harbor Café in Stonington. $10 gets you dinner and a movie. ‘La Cucina Italiana’
The Penobscot School of Language Learning in Rockland will host an Italian cooking class featuring renowned food writer Nancy Harmon Jenkins from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16. “La Cucina Italiana Inverno” teaches a pan-Italian winter meal, including a bean and sauerkraut soup, risotto, a hearty roast farmyard chicken and seasonal Tuscan dishes, as well as a very simple apple cake for dessert.
