DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Halstyn Gunther, son of Michelle and Eugene Gunther III of Dexter, was the first baby born in 2009 at Mayo Regional Hospital.

Weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounce, Halstyn was born at 10:46 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3. He is the third son born to the Gunthers, and joins brothers Haedyn, 7, and Holdyn, 2.

Halstyn Gunther and all other Maine resident babies born this year will be eligible through the Harold Alfond College Challenge to receive a $500 grant to start a NextGen college account. Philanthropist Harold Alfond established the program before he died to ensure access to higher education for all Maine’s children. There is no income limit or need to contribute additional money to receive the grant.

Before leaving Mayo, the Gunther family will be offered information about the challenge grant and the NextGen account. Babies’ families must open a NextGen account before the baby’s first birthday to receive the Alfond grant.
