BIDDEFORD, Maine — A report of an unmanned lobster boat with its engine running has prompted the Coast Guard to search off the southern Maine coast for a possible missing person.

The boat was discovered off Wood Island at 7 a.m. Saturday. A Coast Guard Falcon jet from Cape Cod and a motor boat from Portland Harbor were called out after the boat, the “Mis Fit,” was discovered by two duck hunters between the mainland at Biddeford Pool and the island.

The Coast Guard says the boat belongs to Thomas Casamassa of Saco, who was not in the vessel and was safe on land. He told officials he left the boat Friday tied to its mooring off Wood Island. It’s not clear if anyone was on the boat when it left its mooring.
