AUGUSTA, Maine — With the deaths of two young snowmobilers already this season in Maine, Gov. John Baldacci joined the state Warden Service in urging power sledders to be careful, sober and use common sense when they take to Maine’s trails this winter.
State game Commissioner Danny Martin says wardens will be out to ensure that there’s no repeat this season of last season’s snowmobile death toll of 12. Officials plan trail-side safety checks as the season gets busier and say safety laws, especially operating under the influence, will be aggressively enforced.
At a news conference Tuesday at Warden Service headquarters, Baldacci said snowmobiling is a huge boon to the state’s economy. But Baldacci says he wants snowmobilers to take safety seriously and pass that message on to others.
