WATERVILLE, Maine — A 64-year-old woman who served time for shooting her husband and chopping his body into 15 pieces is back in jail on a shoplifting charge.

Vella Gogan of Skowhegan was summoned Sunday for the theft of two pairs of shoes and two water bottles from a sporting goods store in Waterville. She was later jailed without bail for violating probation on her manslaughter conviction.

Gogan was charged with murder in 1999 for allegedly killing her husband in his sleep at their home in Hartland and cutting him into pieces. His dismembered remains were later found near a logging road more than 20 miles from their home.

Gogan maintained that she had been abused by her husband during their 37-year marriage and shot him out of fear that he was going to kill her.

Before her trial began, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to six years in prison. She was released in 2006.
