TOWNSHIP 13, RANGE 5, Maine — Maine game wardens say a 15-year-old from Windham died from his injuries after crashing his snowmobile into a tree west of the town of Portage.

Lt. Doug Tibbetts says there was freezing rain and poor visibility at the time of the crash late Saturday afternoon. He says wardens reported that freezing rain was accumulating on helmet visors and that riders were having to stop to wipe away the ice.

He says the teen died in the evening after being treated at Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle and transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Tibbetts declined to release the name of the teen, who was part of a group of eight snowmobile riders. He says speed and poor visibility were factors in the crash.
