HOULTON, Maine — Area youth got an early Christmas present Monday evening as money continued to pour into town coffers to expand and renovate the Just For Kids playground in Community Park.
During a nearly two-hour Town Council meeting, the council accepted $2,770 donated by individuals, groups and organizations for the playground renovation project. That money came on top of $2,925 donated last June.
In 2007 and 2008, the Houlton Rotary Club also donated a portion of the money raised through its 52nd and 53rd annual Rotary Radio & TV Auctions for the playground project.
The equipment at the facility needs to be replaced mainly because of its age.
Councilors expressed appreciation for the donation.
It is not yet known when the renovation of the playground will begin.
In other business, councilors:
ä Approved the renewal of a liquor license for Richard A. Kelley, doing business as O’Kelly’s Irish Pub.

ä Accepted $200 from Empowering Life as a payment in lieu of taxes.
