LEWISTON, Maine — The state ethics commission staff is recommending that the political action committee of the Maine Association of Realtors be fined $10,000 for missing a deadline for reporting expenditures in two legislative races.
The staff said it proposed that the PAC be assessed the maximum fine because the delayed filing was a “significant violation” that potentially affected the outcome of close races in Senate Districts 15 and 22.
The spending included postcard mailings on behalf of Republican Senate candidates Lois Snowe-Mello of Poland and Christopher Rector of Thomaston. Rector was elected and Snowe-Mello was defeated in the November election.
Cindy Butts, chief executive of the Maine Association of Realtors, said the delayed filing was an administrative mistake.
