Cushing snowmobiler killed when hit by car

By From Staff and Wire Reports, Special to the BDN

CUSHING, Maine — A young man from Cushing has become Maine’s first snowmobile fatality this winter after tumbling into the path of an oncoming car on a town road.

State police said 19-year-old Derek Benner was operating his snowmobile at a high speed on River Road when he either fell or was thrown from the machine into the road. Benner was then struck and killed by a car driven by 18-year-old Tyler Wadford, also of Cushing. Wadford was not injured.

The crash was reported at 5:20 p.m. Although Benner was killed on a snowmobile, the death is recorded as a highway death because the crash took place on a public road, said police.

There were 12 snowmobile fatalities in Maine last winter.
