WILLIMANTIC, Maine — A passenger on a snowmobile was injured Sunday night when the driver lost control of the vehicle in a snowstorm and it crashed into a ditch and rolled over.

Chris Simpson, 25, of Willimantic, who was a passenger on a snowmobile driven by her father, Richard Simpson, 50, also of Willimantic, suffered abdominal and chest injuries and was taken by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, according to investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s De-partment. She later was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. No information about Simpson was available Monday, according to a hospital spokesman.

The father and daughter had been snowmobiling on the snow-covered Main Road near the recycling center when the accident occurred, Dow said. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Richard Simpson suffered minor injuries, he said. The 2003 Polaris 600 snowmobile had minor damage.

The investigation is continuing and charges may be brought against the driver for operating a snowmobile on a public way and for operating an unregistered snowmobile, according to Dow.
